Did you fly or were you part of the land crew? 1956 was the time of the F86 Sabre, but I guess at a Newfoundland they didn't station those, but instead some long range bomber. Wasn't that one of the bases that Marilyn visited?

I was a weapons specialists on the F-89-D Scorpion Fighter Interceptor Aircraft.  We defended the Northeast Atlantic Region from Soviet Bombers that would be coming over the North Pole to attack the U.S. We did not have the B-52's but we did have the KC-97 aircraft that refueled the B-52's.  

The F-89's carried Rockets in the wing pods.  Google Northrup F-89-D and you will get a look at the aircraft.  I need to learn how to post pictures  to the forum.

Yep. Superspeedway -- but no low downforce, unless the upgrades for chassis config have been locked on something.

As a relative new guy, I have a few questions about the procedures under caution, if I may.


Will the pits be closed when the caution is issued, until the field is established behind the safety car? Or can drivers dive into the pits before forming up behind the safety car?

Under caution, can lapped cars pit when the lead-lap cars pit? Or must they wait until the next lap under caution?

If the game/mod is controlling yellow flags, is there a "Minimum Number of Laps Under Caution" set? If so, how many laps do we get? (It could make a difference on the last stop, if we are on the edge of a fuel window.)

And just a few notes for drivers not familiar with oval track racing in rFactor:

As the series rules say, when the yellow flag is issued the field is frozen. But drivers must slow down safely! DO NOT stand on the brakes or lift off the throttle abruptly -- especially in the corners! rFactor will allow you do over run the car in front of you in order to slow down safely. Just give the position back as soon as possible when can be done reasonably.

The rFactor Message Center will tell you if you are ahead of the car you should be following. And if you have your driver labels turned on, the label of the car you should be following will be in a different color (usually yellow). AND, the person you need follow may change several times over the course of a caution period due to pit stops, etc. So pay attention and stay sharp, even under caution.

And I do not want to contradict the HSO rules, but everything above is true when approaching the safety car at high speed. For instance, a driver has just crossed the start/finish line at 200mph when the yellow flag is issued -- popping up in the upper left corner of your screen and in the message center. DO NOT stand on the brakes to get down to the safety car's 90mph! Slow down reasonably, roll past the safety car but fall back behind when you know you won't get run over from behind.

This is also true at other points on the track. If you misjudge your approach to the safety car or cars already in the formation, over runs are permissible in order not to cause an accident. But a smart driver has one eye on his lap tracker in order to ease up on the field or the safety car without an over run.

If you are racing in a pack or drafting when the caution flag is issued, fan out in case the guy in front slows abruptly. And as you approach, or already in, the formation, ALWAYS keep one eye on your mirrors for the driver who misjudged the approach. If a driver is coming in hot, use your best judgment on which way to go to prevent someone else from ruining your race.

The whole point is to ALWAYS pay close attention to your surroundings! Caution periods on an oval are more treacherous than green flag conditions. During green, you and the cars immediately around you have a say in how your race goes. Under caution, the whole field has the chance to wreck your day!

I beg the forgiveness of the admins if I have over stepped my bounds. But, as someone who has committed everyone of the mistakes I listed above, I just wanted to offer some help to guys who are trying to figure out what I have failed at in the past.

1956? wasn't B-36 and B-47 who were still dominant in SAC? It's barely a year after the launch of the B-52 in operational service.

For the record In USSR the T-95 was just entering in service. It's still T-4 and T-20 who were the main planes in strategic bombing.


BAck to race topic. My gout crisis is still there. Can't train as I need to. The race will be utmost difficult at best for sure

The pits will not close when cautions are issued, so you can dive into the pits when the opportunity presents itself.  

There is no rule saying lead lap cars pit before lapped cars.

The laps under caution are randomized; if you look in the mod rfm, it will tell you the minimum.

Please forgive me, I have a follow-up question . . .

I tested my first question in an off-line race with the AI. When the yellow came out, I dove into the pits immediately off of Turn 3 (before crossing start/finish and catching up to the safety car). All of the work on the car was completed, but when I re-joined the track and took my place at the back of the formation (still under yellow), I was assessed a drive-thru penalty.

Is that merely a difference between my machine off-line and the HSO server on-line? Or do we actually have to take the yellow flag at start/finish before coming in the next time around?

It certainly isn't favorable, but only a minor inconvenience since you are already facing a long pit stop anyway. I would advise going ahead and pitting before taking the yellow at start/finish and trying to catch up to the field for several reasons. Among them being: your crew will still do all the work on your car, avoid further damage to the car, the car might not make it that far anyway, your crew may need the extra time to repair damage while the field makes their initial lap under yellow saving you from losing additional laps, you're going to restart at the back of the field anyway, etc. The pass-thru penalty is a small price to pay if it saves you track position while repairing damage.

I was merely exploring the advantage of diving into the pits before taking the yellow to advance position when the rest of the field followed the pace car and came in one lap later. At which point, I would pass everyone pitting then. But being assessed the penalty eliminates any advantage to doing it. (It's something Donahue would have tried.)

But if you need to repair damage, it's well worth trying it.

What is recommended for graphic setting? I dont care about strange skies, but a stable game tonight. Any experience with this track?

This track is rather high in FPS so I recommend setting the competitors cars to medium detail and the number of visible cars to 10. Also shadows to medium.
