Only time a Buick made all 200 laps, I believe?

By 1988, the Cosworth DFX was already becoming obsolete. When was the last time a DFX qualified for the 500, and what was it's best result that year? Year and position is the most interesting, but a big plus if you know the driver by hand too!

I actually have no idea but let's throw something out there anyway

I guess it depends if you are asking about the DFX strictly or if it includes its DFS offspring which was pretty much the same engine (like DFV/DFY).

I include DFS.

1991 is correct! Cars with Cosworth DFS engines were entered in 1992, but never stood a chance of qualifying. So where did one finish then in 1991, and who drove that car?

Hint: a good result for that driver at that stage of his career.

Another hint: this driver was the race 2nd oldest, in what would be his 2nd last 500. He finished 12 laps behind winner Rick Mears.

Sounds like AJ as he would retire in 93.

My guess (and it is a guess) is Gordon Johncock. I don't recall his car in '91, but I'm pretty sure '92 was his last race.

It is! Only AJ was his senior in 1991. But where did 12 laps down land him in the results? Ahead of all the Buicks, to give another hint!

My last guess was at least somewhat educated...8th?
