Tech question: X-axis affects Y-axis? Empty
PostSubject: Tech question: X-axis affects Y-axis?   Tech question: X-axis affects Y-axis? Icon_minitimeFri 28 Apr 2017 - 14:33

I have been having a small, yet enoying, issue with my pedals.

Whenever I press the X-axis (used for accelerator), this also slightly moves up the Y-axis (used for brakes). Even if I the brake-pedal is fully extended and there is no pressure on the brake-pedal whatsoever.

In rFactor, on the Settings Controls screen, if I compress the accelerator pedal, the bar of the X-axis colors red, which is logical. However, the bottom of the bar of the Y-axis also colors red for a small part?

The same in DXTweak 64-bit. If I press the X-axis, there is also slight raw input measured on the Y-axis.

Anyone any idea how to fix this?

Cheers,

Timo

I had a similar problem, although not quite exactly the same, some years ago : my brake pedal was being activated on its own which took me weeks to realise and was driving me nuts as I was not understanding why I was suddenly off pace so often :D.

I fixed that by anihilating the early course of the brake pedal with DXTweak, i.e. the first two centimeters or so of its course (which is how far it went into the red by its own) was not taken into account by the game anymore and my braking only took effect when I passed this limit. Didn't change anything to the way I had to drive and gave me those tenths of a second back ^^.

Potentiometers and electronic devices have sometimes "noise", meaning the electric impulses, current, magnetic field, etc can influence around on nearby circuits. You can notice that well on acustic ones, headphones, etc. It is not rare to hear echos when using microphones and earphones, at Team Speak we get that frequently. Hence isolation is so important, and expensive -which is why quality items have both things. So yes, it can happen that you get some slight input on one axis from the pot of another, especially if they are already a bit worn out.

Thanks Frank and Alberto.

It probably indeed is some kind of interference between the two potentiometers.

Is the only solution replacing the potentionmeters by better isolated ones?

Or could I just try to implement some kind of "barrier" between the two potentiometers. I could e.g. verify whether I have the place to make seperate compartiments for each potentiometer by putting small wooden boards in the pedal-unit housing. Would that help stop the "noise" of one potentio affecting the other?

The problem is that most parts of good metal pedals are conductive per se. And when you use somthing intended to be precise (A potentiometer) it is also very sensitive to the electric fields. When you see pedals that have no such problems it is because of very good insulation and also because the electronics board many times comes with core software that filters it, but you can't notice that and simply think that the other pedals are wrong and this ones right, while all of them are in truth emitting the same field around them.

As Frank suggested, DX Tweak fine tuning will render the best results - if a pedal set apparently does not need it, it's because it is already filtering itself. So nothing you can't do with DX Tweak.

Thanks for the feed-back guys.

Tinkered around a bit with DX Tweak last night, and it seems everything is working A OK now. "Love it when a plans comes together..."
