Unfortunately, Al put the car into the fence in practice -- which is well documented in the vintage films that are out there.

I like that on the Bob Harkey picture, they didn't put his name on the car, it still has Mel Kenyon from the Texas race.

Unless he practiced in Mel's Eagle at some point :hum:

It is indeed the Kenyon Coyote from the Texas 200; you can tell by the big triangular headrest  Wink

You gotta love these cars, the gas pedal is like the fast forward button on your DVD :D

That on the video is Philippe de Lespinay's car, restored and on display at the Riverside museum. I contacted him for tecnical info when doing the mod Smile

Here is his blog regarding the restoration of the car, and the invitation to Bobby Unser for the inaugural run after being completed:

Actual speeds from the 1973 Indianapolis 500 qualifying. Fun to compare your own times with. I was pretty close to A.J's speed!

Spoiler:

The actual front row for the 1973 Indy 500, as seen on a post card.
Johnny Rutherford on pole, Bobby Unser in the middle, and Mark Donohue on the outside.

The laptimes show that sometimes it was more the driver than the car who reached the limit or that teams did eventually an all-out effort. It is likely that Martin did some exceptional driving with big balls to be in the show, and the team was willing to risk blowing the engine and screwed the pressure up enough. In turn, other drivers with good cars failed miserably and produced horrible laptimes, or didn't even qualify (Yes Sam that is you).

Martin's McLaren was actually Johncocks McLaren from 1972, so it was a decent car and ran by a crack team to begin with.

I believe Philippe de Lespinay's Eagle 72 is not an "Original" car. It was built in the Early 2000's by AAR specifically for him.

It went upside down and when it landed it did 360's down the road, and Hawkins was upside down and trapped in the thing...So I stopped and a bunch of us got to the car...and we hoisted it up and got it back on it's wheels and he got out of it. He looked back and where he'd taken off, it was way back, 150 yards or more. He looked at the car and he looked way back and he looked at the car and then he said "F@%k"...and that was the story of the Can-Am" -Sam Posey

Yes AFAIK that one and the "Mistery Eagle" replica were built out of spare parts from AAR, but for the chassis core I'm not sure if the latter was actually a recovered one.
